An idea of a friend of mine: "May 10th, 2005: rather than playing around
with a hand grenade, Vladimir Arutyunian gets his hands on a good old Soviet
light RPG-18, and fires the rocket on Bush and Saakashvili during the
American President's state visit to Georgia. The warhead shatters the
bulletproof glass and the President of the United States and his Georgian
colleague perish in the explosion..."

Two obvious results: (1) Dick Cheney is POTUS, and (2) the assassiantion of
the President of Georgia by an ethnic Armenian is likely to have bad
consequences for ethnic relations in that part of the world...

I wonder how the ethnic relations in that part of the world could be much worse than they are. :-)

3rd quite possible result: no Russian-Georgian war of 2008.

But won't seek re-election.

Arutyunian was a lifelong resident of Georgia, anti-US,
and something of a nutcase (he has converted to Islam
in prison).

He had no history of involvement with Armenian causes.

But other _big_ knock-ons:

The Secret Service will become _extremely paranoid
about PotUS traveling outside the US, into any area
not secured to their standards, i.e. anywhere in the
Second or Third World.

Jihadis and other violent groups will become more
interested in assassination.
