Remember when Ronald Reagan wanted to make ketchup qualify as a school lunch vegetable? What a nitwit he was!

Ronald Reagan, American Idiot. 'member when he wanted to make ketchup

Yeah, sad, but true. Reagan wanted to go on the cheap with the
school lunch program, wanting to make ketchup qualify as a vegetable.
So kids could have a hamburger, 2 packs of ketchup and a carton of
milk and it would qualify as 'lunch'.

Yet another example of the averice and greed of that demented old
man. Yeah, cut down on how much it would cost the federal government
to supply the meals so he could spend more money on the evil hand of
conservative government - guns, bombs, etc. You know the deal. About
how President Bush is doing now. One only has to wonder who Ronald
Reagan's Halliburton was, and who was his "Uncle Dicky".

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And I guess it was a case of water seeking its level, for Ronnie
Raygun fittingly ended up a babbling vegetable.

But it was all a conspiracy, anyway.

And, as Sean Hannity is wont to say - his ASSutude, a very apt term

Where exactly in the Constitution does it say the government is responsible
for feeding schoolchildren? My folks used to pack me a lunch every day. My
mom made breakfast every morning before school and supper every night.
Shouldn't feeding the kids be a parental responsibility, not a governmental
one?

Same place it says local and state governments are responsible for
keeping streets and roads in good enough condition for cars and trucks.

I believe it's right after the Constitutional provision for providing
the President with a residence, and a White House chef.

"Congress did not specify how the cuts would be achieved, so the Department

food program by more than 25 percent, proposed a novel approach: pickle
relish and ketchup would count as the vegetable portion of the five required

Doesn't matter, that was minor compared to his treason which consisted of
making deals with and selling of arms to known terrorists:

Iran-contra affair, in U.S. history, secret arrangement in the 1980s to
provide funds to the Nicaraguan contra rebels from profits gained by selling
arms to Iran. The Iran-contra affair was the product of two separate
initiatives during the administration of President Ronald Reagan. The first
was a commitment to aid the contras who were conducting a guerrilla war
against the Sandinista government of Nicaragua. The second was to placate
"moderates" within the Iranian government in order to secure the release of
American hostages held by pro-Iranian groups in Lebanon and to influence
Iranian foreign policy in a pro-Western direction.

Yes, and by doing so, Ronald Reagan broke the existing law...that
being - NO involvement in a sovereign nation. But illegalities didn't
stop Ronald Reagan after all. Blame it all on Bonzo - that chimp had

Absolutely. The only truly moral people in this country are
the faggots in San Fran, and cross-dressers and anarchists in Seattle.

Oh, I almost forgot - also all non-christians and non-NRA

their membership card before voting. Preferably, they should also
show documentation that they have had a homosexual relationship of at
least one year, and are muslim and/or black.

You misspelled Idol.

Actually ketchup is very healthy and can be considered a vegetable, particularly for
those that need five or six vegies a day. Processed tomatoes (i.e., ketchup, sauces,
etc.) have more food value than raw tomatoes.....AAC

You say the Reagan administration didn't want to make ketchup (or is
it catsup?) a vegetable for the school lunch program and then you say
his Department of Agriculture made the proposal to count it as a
vegetable. What's the difference? At first, Reagan supported the
idea even though he didn't come up with it... or any other idea, for
that matter. He didn't get ideas.

Somehow, I'm just a wee bit more concerned about issues like (
as is currently in the liberal Congress ) 'Forcing society ( including
employers, schools, etc ) to accept men who want to show up wearing
high heels, a dress, a woman's wig, and makeup, and proclaim
themselves 'women' and, as Congress is trying to do, making it illegal
to say 'That's not right, that's not acceptable'.

Just the tomato. I was just pointing out the idea was not as outlandish as it
seems on the surface. Also a serving is defined by quantity not by what it is.
Rest assured a couple packets of catsup would not count as a complete serving.
It would count for no more than its weight as part of a serving.

Surprising to some but you can have well balanced diet with pizza even with the
basic toppings which includes the fruity tomato sauce. Speaking of pizza you can
have bell peppers and several types of hot peppers and olives which, along with
the tomato sauce, also count as fruits.

So tell me do stuffed peppers count as a serving of fruit? Why not?

It had something to do with tariffs or end usage. Consider tomato jam, peanut
butter and tomato sandwiches and the old favorite tomato wine. Yes by definition
it is a fruit however almost all of its uses are as a vegetable. If there were a
separate culinary definition of foods it would be classified a vegetable.

Why is a strawberry classified as a fruit when it is the only fruit with the
seeds on the outside?

Other than a running joke at the time the issue is not as straight forward from
the nutritional side as one might think. There is a problem with serving fruit,
almost all the prepared ones have added sugar as are jams and jellies count.
Fresh ones are quite expensive unless in season locally and present inspection,
handling and storage problems.

And if the definition is strictly a fresh fruit as defined by science a fresh
bell pepper or jalapeño pepper satisfies the requirement as do figs if they are
in season but most people do not like them. There is no requirement that the
students eat the fruits they are served and there are clearly ways to assure
they will not if fresh peppers are the fruit.

And mashed potato isn't a potato.

The tomato is a berry.

And ketchup (or catsup) has more sugar in it than does a similar amount
of ice cream.

Are you refering to walnut ketchup or grape ketchup? Ketchup is a generic term
for a class of condiment that were popular in the US back when everyone made
their own and that was the generic name for it.

tomatoes come in third place.

listed is tomato concentrate (paste, I assume).

Ketchup is not significantly different from any other sort of
processed tomato sauce you'll find at your grocery store.

If tomato sauce or even tomato juice can be categorized as a
vegetable for dietary purposes, so can ketchup.

I imagine it would be a lot easier to drink a glass of V-8 than it
would be to choke down an equivalent quantity of ketchup.

Factoid, you stupid fucking moron - we're talking about ketchup, not
tomatoes.
Factoid, you stupid fucking moron - the fact that tomatoes are
culinarily a vegeteble does not mean that anything containing tomatoes
is thereby a vegetable, any more than it means that carrot cake -
containing the vegetable carrot - is a vegetable.

Got that, you stupid fucking moron?

I interpreted his posting as 1) a presentation of the stupidity of the USDA,
since the tomato is actually a berry and hence, a FRUIT, and 2) an
implication that since teh USDA got it wrong about the tomato beign a
vegetable, they could get it wrong again, about ketchup being a vegetable.

And, do you kiss your mother with that mouth?

Yeah, sad, but true.
No, its false. And another yellow-dog Democrat is destroyed publically for
LYING.
"Congress did not specify how the cuts would be achieved, so the Department
of Agriculture, scrambling for a palatable way of reducing the costs of the
food program by more than 25 percent, proposed a novel approach: pickle
relish and ketchup would count as the vegetable portion of the five required
school-lunch food items (meat, milk, bread, and two servings of fruits or
vegetables). So swift was the reaction to this "ketchup as vegetable" plan
that the Reagan administration quickly put the billion dollars back into the
program."http://www.hoover.org/publications/ednext/3219311.html
You say the Reagan administration didn't want to make ketchup (or is
it catsup?) a vegetable for the school lunch program and then you say
his Department of Agriculture made the proposal to count it as a
vegetable. What's the difference? At first, Reagan supported the
idea even though he didn't come up with it... or any other idea, for
that matter. He didn't get ideas.
