Note that this sentence is completely unsourced. It is also IMO wrong. The
Democrats were widely expected to lose some House seats, but not nearly
enough to lose control of the House; and the Gallup poll did not show any
appreciable improvement in the Democrats' standing after the Cuban Missile
Crisis. For a detailed explanation of why 1962 was never likely to be a
"wave" year for the Republicans, and why the Cuban Missile Crisis probably
helped the Democrats much less than some people suppose (and than I used to
